As your local Parts and Service experts, we’ve listed a few important elements of any car service that will help keep your vehicle moving and prevent costs down the road.
For any car that was manufactured after 2000, it is vital that you use the manufacturer’s fluids or a recommended comparable product. Not doing so can result in transmission and other parts either not functioning properly and/or producing an excessive amount of noise.
While this may seem obvious, many people don’t check their battery’s performance until it is too late. Don’t wait until you experience a battery problem as you leave for work (or worse, on the road). Be sure to check your battery every year (around the fall is best) to ensure it is in good working order, or have your maintenance team check it on your behalf.
The tread on your tires is extremely important, regardless of the season. If you are unable to properly stop and maneuver because of your tires, this can cause a potentially dangerous situation for yourself and other road users.
Be sure to inspect your tires regularly, and report anything that looks odd to your maintenance team. Consider investing in a tire tread depth gauge, available at low cost from many retailers, to help you determine when it’s time for new tires.
Pro Tip: Be sure to also check your tire pressure regularly, as it is significantly affected by swings in outside air temperature. You can improve your fuel mileage and the life expectancy of your tires by ensuring that they are not over or under-inflated.
“Out of sight, out of mind” doesn’t apply to your air filters. While often a forgotten piece of equipment, your air filters can save you money and keep your vehicle operating well. Clogged and dirty filters can cause your engine to burn more fuel and negatively affect cabin air quality. Be sure to get your air filter inspected every second oil change to maximize your car’s efficiency.
Replacing your brake fluid is extremely important and should never be forgotten. On many vehicles, your brake fluid should be changed every 2 years, or roughly every 40,000 kilometers. Not replacing your brake fluid can be dangerous, as it may greatly compromise your car’s ability to properly brake.
